Understanding Your Bill

*This content is currently applicable to customers in the Bangor Hydro District only.

At the top of the bill, you'll find a helpful, "at-a-glance" Account Summary. The Energy Comparison section, located in the middle of the first page of your bill, gives helpful details about your energy usage, including:

  • KWH. Shown for this month, last month, and one year ago.
  • Service Days. The length of days between meter readings can affect your Total Cost. This helps you compare your Total Cost against your daily use
  • KWH Per Day. A "month to month" and "year ago" comparison helps you manage your usage.
  • Cost Per Day. Electricity is a good value. Your cost per day helps you monitor your overall daily use and understand your usage throughout the year.

On the bill, there are separate costs for both Emera Maine's Electric Delivery Service and your third-party Electricity Supply.

The price of electricity includes:

  • Competitive supply. The cost of electricity commodity provided by competitive energy suppliers or the standard offer.
  • Delivery. This is Emera Maine’s part of the business — the regulated cost of delivering electricity to consumers.  There are three components to the delivery costs:
    • Transmission — the costs of moving electricity at higher voltages across longer distances.
    • Distribution — the costs of locally delivering electricity to homes and businesses, plus government-mandated charges, such as taxes and fees for energy-efficiency and low-income programs.
    • Stranded costs — unrecovered costs associated with electric industry restructuring in the 1990s, and current above-market costs for government-mandated long-term contracts for renewable power.
